Rough and tumble play

Rough and tumble play is one of those areas where educators can feel caught between children's need for energetic physical play and very real responsibilities around safety, supervision, comfort and consent. I want this space to help us talk about what is actually happening on the floor, not just what theory says should happen.

Let's talk

What does rough and tumble play look like in your service?

Are children allowed to wrestle? Do you redirect physical play into particular spaces or activities? What tells you both children are still enjoying the play, and what makes you step in? I am especially interested in how child safety expectations have changed the way your team now responds.

Children often seek pushing, pulling, climbing, rolling, crashing and playful physical movement because these experiences give their bodies important information about balance, strength, body awareness and space. At home, rough and tumble play does not need to mean uncontrolled wrestling. You might try crawling races, climbing over cushions, pushing a large cardboard box, rolling across a soft mat or playing a gentle hand-pushing game. The important part is that the play remains mutual, supervised and enjoyable for everyone involved. Watch your child's signals, keep the environment safe and stop when anyone is uncomfortable or no longer enjoying the game.
